• Swim in the river pools at Bright (in town) and Porepunkah (near bridge). From 26th December until 26th January the Bright River pool is supervised daily from 12 noon to 6pm. Thereafter it is usually supervised on weekends until early March.

• Brights Splash park is open all year round but most fun in the warmer months.

• Rotary water slide just up from the Bright River pool. This runs from early afternoon throughout the January schol holidays.

• Get lost in Australia's largest living hedge maze at the Wandi maze.

• Catch a trout or salmon at the Trout Farm and BBQ it on site (free to fish but you pay $13kg for caught trout and $17 per kg from caught Atlantic Salmon. Operators will clean and gut the fish for you. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The breathtaking scenic beauty of the Ovens and King Valleys, Everton Hills and the Alpine High Country can be safely enjoyed by all types of cycling and walking enthusiasts.

Following historical railway lines the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail provides 94km of bitumen sealed track well suited to both cycling and walking. The trail has a gentle gradient that makes it suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, and is a must do for all visitors to the region.

This trail is an ideal introduction into the diverse countryside of the North East Victorian alps and valleys. It will lead you deep into pine forests and natural bushland then out in the open through valleys nestled amongst some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Australia.

The trail links the townships of Wangaratta, Beechworth, Myrtleford, Porepunkah and Bright, all offering their own unique character and style at pleasant intervals along the trail. Each township provides a range of accommodation options to suit any budget or desire, fine wine, food, bike hire and countless opportunities to experience a variety of other activities ensuring that the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail offers a visitor experience like no other.he sealed 94 kms of our famous Rail Trail is wonderful for both walkers and bike riders. It takes you through towns and meanders near wineries.

Situated at the foothills of the Victorian Alps, the Bright Country Golf Club is a unique 18 hole golf course designed by Tony Cashmore. 

A par 72, 6097 metre course with manicured grass greens and beautifully developed tree lined fairways.

Course features include: Fully equipped golf shop, clubs, motorised catrs and push buggies available for hire. Licensed clubhouse and regular competetions. The annual tournament is held in October. We are also a 20 minute drive away from Myrtleford Golf club and Mt Beauty golf club.

While the river valleys and nearby lookouts have created many idyllic walks, sometimes you just want to get up there in the clear mountain air and enjoy the panorama of valleys spread out below you. So when the mood takes you Mt Buffalo National Park and the Alpine National Park are very easy drives from Bright.

There are many short and long walks in the High Country, from a few hundred metres off the track to a high country hut or an overnight hike - but good planning needs to be completed before you go. You can also drive just as far as Harrietville and start some of the walks up to the High Country from there.

The beautiful Ovens and Buckland Rivers offer ripple rafting, canoeing and kayaking. Tour operators can take you to a calm area or areas for the more adventurous or experienced.

Head up to Mount Buffalo National Park and explore picturesque Lake Catani in a canoe or stand up paddle board.  They may be hired from Adventure Guides Australia, drop down to Lake Catani day visitor area or Dingo Dell Cafe to hire.

Lake Catani on Mount Buffalo, Pretty Valley Storage facility in Falls Creek and Harrietville Tronoh Dredge Hole are other short drives to have a paddle. 

For those that want to troll for fish from their “tinny” a trip to Lake Buffalo, Rocky Valley Dam or Mt Beauty pondage is always worth a try.  If water skiing is your sport Lake Buffalo has facilities for this.

Have you ever wondered how to fish for trout? Bait, fishing gear and fishing licenses can be purchased in Bright (recreational-fishing-licenses required for ages 18-70). Try the pondage at Mt Beauty, Lake Buffalo, Kiewa River, Ovens River and Buckland River.

The best time for fly fishing is from October to December. The Ovens River and its tributaries are closed for all fishing from the Queens Birthday weekend (early June) to the first week in September.

Try the Mountain Fresh Trout and Salmon Farm in Harrietville where you can catch your own trout in a lot less time. Half and full day fly fishing schools are available.

The Alpine National Park and state forests near Bright are filled with tracks and roads for four wheel drive and dirt bike enthusiasts... This is possible mainly during the drier weather as roads are closed during winter and early spring and during periods of storm or bushfire damage. Care is needed as log trucks can be encountered without warning. Award winning four wheel drive tours are also available.

Since the mid 1800s, gold has been found in the valleys around Bright.

Steeped with a rich gold history, the Ovens and Buckland Rivers still holds the glitter of gold for those lucky enough to find the right spot and willing to try their hand at gold panning or fossicking. Remember your Miner's Rights license before prospecting.

You should also visit the Bright Museum, The Gold Museum, the Gold Battery, the Harrietville Museum and various walks where interpretive signs explain the history.
